Dear SHRM-Memphis Members,
Today is December 31, 2017. Day 365 of 365. It is also day 730 of 730 of an incredible two-year journey as your President.
In January 2016 when I started my journey I said to all of you, “YOU make SHRM-Memphis what it is today. That’s right. You, the member, make this chapter what it is with your passion, drive, overwhelming excitement, and true dedication and commitment to your chapter and the HR profession.” And now two-years later, or 720 days later, this comment is still so true; all of you make SHRM-Memphis what it is today and I could not have gone on this incredible journey without your commitment, support and enthusiasm for our great chapter.
We have had some great times over this two-year period, and we have embarked upon new adventures. We updated our Chapter’s Mission and Vision statement that is a true testament to that which we are, what we do, and what we believe in. Our Mission statement: SHRM-Memphis is the resource for professional development through engagement, education, and empowerment of HR Professionals to be effective business partners throughout the Mid-South, and our Vision Statement: To become an engaged HR organization that is recognized as a strategic partner for the Mid-South business community.
We hosted the 2016 TN SHRM State conference at the Cook Convention Center, and hosted the conference attendees at the Bass Pro Shops for an amazing social! Lots of great educational sessions and lots of opportunities to network with new friends and catch-up with old friends.
We changed the format of our socials to be more of a “Mix-n-Mingle” – this new format was a great success and we thank you for your attendance at these events.
In memory of a great HR leader in Memphis that left us too soon, we changed the name of one of the HR Excellence Awards, the HR Executive of the Year Award, to the George Mabon HR Executive of the Year Award. We were so honored to have George’s family and friends at the 2016 HR Excellence Awards ceremony, and I was even more honored and humbled to have been nominated and receive the 2016 George Mabon HR Executive of the Year Award. We also updated several of the other award categories, and in 2017 we are aligning the timing of the nominee’s activities to be on a calendar year basis resulting in the HR Excellence Awards ceremony to be held in February 2018 honoring nominees for their 2017 accomplishments. In 2016 we also added a new category to the HR Excellence Awards, the HR Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is voted on by the SHRM-Memphis Board of Directors and Judy Bell, an outstanding contributor to the field of HR and the Memphis community, was the first recipient of this award.
We were able, thanks to Jim Price, SHRM-Memphis’ VP of Diversity & Inclusion, and his team, to host the SHRM-Memphis 1st Annual Multicultural Diversity & Inclusion Conference. Jim has worked on this idea for several years and it was an amazing event that we held in October of this year, and what a great success. We were so fortunate to have such powerhouse speakers: Lindsay Carter (NW MS SHRM), Victor Charles (ServiceMaster), Victor Rocha (Medtronic Spinal), Quinn Thompson-Slaughter (International Paper), Randy Irving (FedEx Services), Charles Henderson (Medtronic Spinal and Biologics), Lani Glancy (AutoZone, Inc.), Shiela inczeller (International Paper), Courtney Leyes (Fisher Phillips), Tracie Montgomer (Randstad Sourceright, for an RPO at BASF), Tori Black, FedEx), Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell and Chandell Carr, Esq. (City of Memphis). And we were honored to have Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, and Alex Smith, Chief HR Officer, City of Memphis, present to SHRM-Memphis proclamations honoring October 6 as Diversity & Inclusion Day. During this incredible journey I have had the opportunity to work with a dynamic group of colleagues who served as your 2016-2017 SHRM-Memphis Board of Directors. These dedicated professionals have worked diligently with me on this two-year journey and I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to them for their expertise, words of encouragement, teamwork and collaboration, dedication and commitment, and the willpower to never give up.
Naturally I cannot end my message without a reminder that each year when you renew your National SHRM membership, please make sure that you re-affiliate your membership with SHRM-Memphis, your local chapter. This affiliation brings revenue to your chapter so that we may continue bringing the top-notch speakers for your monthly training programs. Finally, thank you to all of you, more than 900 SHRM-Memphis members, for allowing me the opportunity to serve you and to lead this “superior” chapter. It has been a distinct honor…and lots of fun! Your 2018-2019 Board of Directors is ready to start serving you in the new year, well actually tomorrow, and with the leadership of Verlinda Henning, as your President, and Brigette Wilson, as your President-Elect, we will continue to have a superior chapter with lots of amazing things to come!
